Why Not Mike Huckabee, II?

The religious right, a.k.a, social conservatives, a.k.a., values voters received a verbal assault form an unexpected source Sunday, George Will. Will took the GOP batshit crazy wingnuts to task. He told them to grow up. Here is Crooks and Liars post on Will with the video clip. Will asked an interesting question, why don’t they rally around Mike Huckabee?

The zealots do seem to be in disarray. The GOOP top tier of candidates, Rudy, Fred, Willard, and John are not 100% on the issues of abortion, gay marriage, and guns. They miss on one issue or are perceived to be johnny-come- latelys in their quest to meet the religious right's certification. The LA Times has a very nice overview of the problems that beset the GOOP religious wingnuts.

But, why not Huckabee? I went to his website. I hoped I would find an issue paper or quote that made me go "Aha, I can now understand why the crazies don’t want Mike." Didn’t happen. No, I read his issues. They seem to be right out of the religious right’s playbook. Huckabee seems to be the very model of a religious right presidential candidate. Go to his web site, read his issue statements.

When I have had the opportunity to hear him talk, I have been quite surprised. He is not a 9/11, fear, terrorists will kill you candidate like Rudy. He is not a flip and flop into the religious right’s mold candidate like Willard (Mitt). He is not a one issue war candidate like John. He is not an asleep at the wheel candidate like Fred. Huckabee is knowledgeable. He speaks clearly and simply. He reasons. He answers questions. He, for a wingut, seems decent. He reminded me of another candidate who hailed from Hope, Arkansas. I am not a GOOPER, but Huckabee and Ron Paul seem to be the best the GOOP has to offer.

Fortunately for the Dems, neither Paul nor Huckabee will get the nod. The latest pols show that Clinton would resoundingly beat all the top tier GOOPERS. The moneyed part of the GOOP still throws its cash at the losers. It makes no sense. If the GOOP paid any attention they would shove money at Mike, buy ads all over the place and make Mike a household name. Then they can take a Clinton - Huckabee poll. Hillary would be up against a religious right version of her husband and it just might be an even match. I have a feeling that Ron Paul is about the same. Back him, get him known, and the Dems are not a shoe-in in ‘08.

Do these religious wingnuts make any sense to you? Aren’t there any reasonable people left in the GOOP?
