Oops, If Obama is a Venture Capitalist...

ObamaCo backed Solyndra for about a half billion. They paid a lot green (borrowed of course) to push green as the next big thing and create jobs.  Oops, the company failed.  It can't compete in the world market.   I'll let you decide if there was a bit of quid pro quo going on.

These kinds of projects do not seem to work.  Can anyone show me one that has? Government can't create the next big thing.   It can't even jump start it.  It can do things like the Internet, in the sense, set it up to an extent and keep it open for competition.  The Web worked.  I hope that made sense.

What's the next big thing?  Well, if I had my way, I'd wire the whole damn country with the fastest most robust Internet network possible for all comers to use.  If we want the next big thing it has to be a super fast, omnipresent,  humongous pipe of connectivity--wireless and wired--so work can literally be done anywhere you want anytime you want by anyone who is inclined to work.  Connectivity should be abundant, cheap, and everywhere you go.  Why not spend the unborn taxpayers taxes on building, coast to coast, the world's biggest, fastest and greatest capacity network?  I don't know where we would drive the equivalent of the golden spike on this, but we could do it again at  Promontory Summit, Utah.

Health Insurance Reform, a.k.a. Obamacare

The GOP rails about the health insurance reforms the Dems pulled off.  The GOPs claims about its effects on business far exceed any reality, even of the multiverse.  However, calling it Obamacare makes for catchy smear theater.  It works.  Why?

Okay, if you are a Dem and don't hate Obamacare, other than adding several million uninsured to the rolls of the insured, what's your favorite provision of the reform?  Come on you can name at least, well, one.  What does the law actually accomplish for you or someone else.  Oh, when do the uninsured become insured?  Today? Tomorrow?  The Next Day?  Now shift gears and tell me about Social Security?  I bet you had a lot more to say.

If you claim to have done something good for people and no one knows any of the details, then it's easy for opponents to vilify and castigate you.  They can call your program evil.  As Obamacare keeps on getting trashed,  more and more people nod their heads in agreement since all they hear from the Obama and the Dems is the sound of silence.   The GOP has some damned good tacticians and strategists.  The Dems have a PR challenged Obama.

A Second Opinion

Earlier this week I posted about Allan J. Lichtman's track record at calling elections.  Here's another take on Lictman's record--

Despite Keys, Obama Is No Lock

Okay back to the drawing board?

Gee, I don't know why but it made me think of Tom Lehrers Songs--

One week of every year is designated National Brotherhood Week. This is just one of many such weeks honoring various worthy causes. One of my favorites is National Make-fun-of-the-handicapped Week which Frank Fontaine and Jerry Lewis are in charge of as you know. During National Brotherhood Week various special events are arranged to drive home the message of brotherhood. This year, for example, on the first day of the week Malcolm X was killed which gives you an idea of how effective the whole thing is. I'm sure we all agree that we ought to love one another and I know there are people in the world that do not love their fellow human beings and I hate people like that. Here's a song about National Brotherhood Week.

Oh, the white folks hate the black folks,
And the black folks hate the white folks.
To hate all but the right folks
Is an old established rule.

But during National Brotherhood Week, National Brotherhood Week,
Lena Horne and Sheriff Clarke are dancing cheek to cheek.
It's fun to eulogize
The people you despise,
As long as you don't let 'em in your school.

Oh, the poor folks hate the rich folks,
And the rich folks hate the poor folks.
All of my folks hate all of your folks,
It's American as apple pie.

But during National Brotherhood Week, National Brotherhood Week,
New Yorkers love the Puerto Ricans 'cause it's very chic.
Step up and shake the hand
Of someone you can't stand.
You can tolerate him if you try.

Oh, the Protestants hate the Catholics,
And the Catholics hate the Protestants,
And the Hindus hate the Muslims,
And everybody hates the Jews.

But during National Brotherhood Week, National Brotherhood Week,
It's National Everyone-smile-at-one-another-hood Week.
Be nice to people who
Are inferior to you.
It's only for a week, so have no fear.
Be grateful that it doesn't last all year!

Okay, it's time for one more tune--

It's always seems to me that this is precisely the sort of dynamic, positive thinking that we so desperately need in these trying times of crisis and universal broo-ha-ha, and so with this in mind I have here a modern positive dynamic uplifting song in the tradition of the great old revival hymns. This one might more accurately be termed a survival hymn.

When you attend a funeral,
It is sad to think that sooner or
Later those you love will do the same for you.
And you may have thought it tragic,
Not to mention other adjec-
Tives, to think of all the weeping they will do.
But don't you worry.
No more ashes, no more sackcloth.
And an armband made of black cloth
Will some day never more adorn a sleeve.
For if the bomb that drops on you
Gets your friends and neighbors too,
There'll be nobody left behind to grieve.

And we will all go together when we go.
What a comforting fact that is to know.
Universal bereavement,
An inspiring achievement,
Yes, we all will go together when we go.

We will all go together when we go.
All suffuse with an incandescent glow.
No one will have the endurance
To collect on his insurance,
Lloyd's of London will be loaded when they go.

Oh we will all fry together when we fry.
We'll be french fried potatoes by and by.
There will be no more misery
When the world is our rotisserie,
Yes, we will all fry together when we fry.

Down by the old maelstrom,
There'll be a storm before the calm.

And we will all bake together when we bake.
There'll be nobody present at the wake.
With complete participation
In that grand incineration,
Nearly three billion hunks of well-done steak.

Oh we will all char together when we char.
And let there be no moaning of the bar.
Just sing out a Te Deum
When you see that I.C.B.M.,
And the party will be "come as you are."

Oh we will all burn together when we burn.
There'll be no need to stand and wait your turn.
When it's time for the fallout
And Saint Peter calls us all out,
We'll just drop our agendas and adjourn.

You will all go directly to your respective Valhallas.
Go directly, do not pass Go, do not collect two hundred dolla's.

And we will all go together when we go.
Ev'ry Hottentot and ev'ry Eskimo.
When the air becomes uranious,
And we will all go simultaneous.
Yes we all will go together
When we all go together,
Yes we all will go together when we go.

Faithiness

If you enjoyed all the faith based bullshit in the 2008 election, get ready for even more in the 2012 cycle.  I don't quite get all the Jesusy shit.  Look, if you want to live on some fantasy island every Sunday and hallucinate your ass off, fine, just keep the church doors closed and stay in your own pew.  Unfortunately the weak minded are already dominating the race--they can't quite cope with anyone who claims to have truth that is not their own.   Did Darwin discuss devolution?

A hot issue on the campaign trail: theology

If god's agents on earth go after Caesars stuff, Caesar may go after them and Caesar will win.  If Caesar goes after god's stuff, Caesar wins too.  I think the message is keep politics and religion separate, then both can thrive.

The U.S. Shows Little Customer Loyalty

My god, we backed the revolting Arabs in Libya.  We created the No Fly Zone.  We turned our backs on a good customer and ally in our War on Terror!  Wot? Yep, the aces who fan the flames of fear to keep the appropriations coming hired Libya to do their dirty work.  That's why the rich have domestics isn't it?

The CIA worked closely with Moammar Gadhafi’s intelligence services in the rendition of terror suspects to Libya for interrogation, according to documents seen Saturday by the AP, cooperation that could spark tensions between Washington and Libya’s new rulers.

Libyan intelligence documents show ties between US and UK intelligence and Gadhafi regime

Will this be Obama's Undoing?

If you remember how one little blow job put George Bush in the White House, then you might attend to the current Fast and Furious debacle.  Look, if Slick Willie had kept it zipped or at least had told the truth when caught, Al Gore would have been elected.  So, we might want to give Fast and Furious a bit of attention.  You never know who is telling the truth about anything these days.

Here's are re-cap on the ATF's massive fuck up.  Come on they named it after a car flick--

A gunrunning sting gone fatally wrong

Okay, now how does this affect Obama? Well, what if the White knew about the operation? What if they approved it? Okay? Here we go--

White House e-mails refer to gun-trafficking operation

If ObamaCo is actually in the middle of this mess, given jobs and the economy he loses in 2012.  Then again this may be ignored since it involves gun sales.  Inquiries might piss off the NRA.

Based on what they say

If you have listened to any of the GOP's odd lot of candidates give speeches or caught snippets on TV are you impressed with them?  If you are, let me ask you this.  Assume they brought the same level of attention to facts and details we see as they run for office, but they did so in a different occupational area and you needed their services.  Based on the accuracy of what they say in their field, their knowledge, if any of them were brain surgeons would you let them operate on you?  Hell, would you let them work on your car?  Okay, why would you entrust the administration of the executive branch of our government to them?

Okay, I was picking on the GOP, but it's the same with Democrats.

We seem to be a bit schizophrenic when it comes to our pols.  We want them to pander to our biases, prejudices and hates.  We reward the most fact free candidates.  We laud bullshit.  In a massive collective brain fart, we elect them.  Then we have the nerve to wonder what went wrong as they show us they do not know have the skills, knowledge or abilities to administer a $4 trillion company.  If our government was a company, we'd have gone Chapter 7 a long time ago.

Does this make sense?

Fannie and Freddie were (are) in the mortgage biz.  They bought mortgage backed securities from big banks.  Today we know the securities were basically worthless since there were composed of sub-prime loans.   Then when the bubble burst Fannies and Freddie had to be taken back into the federal fold and  bailed out.  Now as time is running out, the Federal Housing Finance Agency is suing major banks (the mortgage bundlers) to recover billions in losses caused by the banker's fraud committed on Fannie and Freddie. I'm going to have to read a bit more on this. Does it make sense to you? I have a feeling the boys and girls in charge of Fannie and Freddie were quite aware of what they bought, but the profits were so great--then it all went south.  In other words all of the people involved in securitzed mortgages were  crooks back then.  Oh, they still are today.  Now why should I trust big business to tell me what's best for the country?  Am I that stupid?  No, I am not, I'm not a Republican.

Federal government sues major banks over Fannie and Freddie losses

Oh, here's a related bit of info. All those mortgages were assessed and rated by bond rating companies. S&P is one of them. They gave AAA ratings to securities not even worth old cat shit. They made a lot of money by abetting fraud and not doing their job. S&P recently downgraded U.S. T-Bills. Does S&P matter? I have a feeling their reputation is gone, if not, it will be--

Is this us II?

Earlier I posted on our para-military, the CIA.  Now let's read about our secret Army.

Top Secret America’: A look at the military’s Joint Special Operations Command

When the ends justify the means, this is what we get.  Where will we end up?  In 50 years?  Law has been shed because we are afraid?  We ought to be afraid, but of our own damn stupidity.  We have voluntarily surrendered The Constitution in fits of patriotic zeal.  Hope y'alls grand kids have a good life, I doubt that most will.  This stuff is depressing.

I bet he rejects evolution too

Who?  Oh the Republican in the White House, that Obama guy.  So much for science.  The EPA rules don't hurt small business or retard job growth.  They do cut into excessive profits and the concentration of wealth amongst the upper 1% while saving taxpayers money in other areas.

Obama halts controversial EPA regulation

I wonder how much money he gained by stopping theEPA?  Does he have the Koch brothers on speed dial?

Remember the 90s?

Back then Slick Willie was president.  The economy was doing pretty fair.  Unemployment was quite low.  Hell, we even ran a surplus if you accept monkeying around with the Social Security cash.  What did Clinton have to do with the boom?  Nada.  A dead monkey could have been in the White House and the economy would have boomed.  Clinton gets credit, but just because he was in office when business was good.  There's very little pols can do to drive the economy.

Now today, it sucks and it's going to keep on sucking.  It won't matter who is in the White House with respect to economic growth and jobs.  Those things develop when people with money decide there's something new worth investing in.  While the election's focus will be jobs, voters ought to pay attention to all the other stuff instead.  The President can "do" a lot--cut taxes, gut programs, wage war or increase taxes, enhance programs and end wars.   What are you going to focus on?

Republican Bullshit

You know the GOP's lines about taxes and regulation.  Those things kill small businesess,  If we got rid of them small businesses would multiply and jobs would grow like weeds.  It sounds good, but it 100% USDA Prime Grade A bullshit.

Taxes and regulations interfere with potential profit maximization in large businesses. The GOP would lose their credibiility if they honestly shilled for the Fortune 100.   So  instead they mislead and misdirect with a pack of lies.  Whenever you hear GOOPERs say "small" remember they're really saying "big."  Want to know what affects small businesses, then go ask them--

Regulations, taxes aren't killing small business, owners say

Aw, it's the little democracy that could

Gee, Wikileaks provided some new evidence about GIs executing Iraqis, kids included, in 2006.  If someone asked Dork Cheney about it, he would say it's sad but okay, because of that ever convenient fog of war.  Hell, Dork's the kind of guy who would order soldiers to go forth and kill families for national security.  I bet the Iraqis did not take well to the leak.  Oh, they haven't--

Iraq to reopen probe of deadly Ishaqi raid

Cut Obama a litte slack?

Maybe, just maybe.  Eugene Robinson does make a good point.

Bush and Cheney remind us how we got into this mess

Okay, I've cut him some slack. For now, no money, no free labor, but he will get my vote. Over the coming months, I'll see if he takes the GOP to task or not keeps on giving them 98% of what they want. If he does show some fire and gives the appearance of actually being a democrat, then maybe I'll give a bit of money for 2012, but he's lost the free labor.  The vote will remain his, just look at the GOP field.

Extreme Stuff

This is getting to be a bit much.  We've had a nasty, smelly fire with air fouling smoke from the Great Dismal Swamp.  Then we had an earthquake.  It was big enough to shut down a nuclear plant.  Oh, over the last weekend, the fire was almost extinguished.  We had a hurricane!  August really sucked.

So what's up for September?  Oh, there's a fire in Texas, but who cares?  After all, Rick Perry will take care of it all by himself, he'll bullshit it out with prayer.  Today, September is really kicked off with, are  you ready?  Here it comes--a TSUNAMI that will eat Alaska!   Well, not quite, but there's too much of this extreme stuff these days.  What's next a volcano in Des Moines?

USGS: Tsunami warning for Alaska’s Aleutian Islands after 7.1 quake in ocean

Help me out

Michelle Bachmann has shown the world she eats batshit for breakfast, lunch and dinner.   She have proven that she is nucking futs.  The folks in Iowa love her, but then she's one of them.  How can she broaden her base?   If she quits making crazy talk, she's suddenly sane?  Do Republicans really just listen to the last sentence spoken by a candidate?  Republicans have no standards at all.  Ms. Bachmann, no matter what she does not say in Florida and elsewhere, will alway be the person we've listened to over the past couple of years--an extreme teabagging evangefundie opportunist who appeals to the political worst in people.

In Fla., crucial state for GOP hopefuls, Michele Bachmann seeks broader support

Is this us?

I don't know if the movies reflect reality or reality reflects the movies.  I am uneasy when the CIA becomes a kill or capture para-military organization answerable to itself.   I am bothered when the CIA kills  people, more or less at will, because a committee has decided someone needs to die.  The killing is done for national security  purposes.  Is this how we preserve our liberty and freedom?  Question, who will stop them?  Today the numbers of killings may be small, but what happens when they become larger?  What happens when the CIA goes domestic?  Gee, here comes Hollywood, haven't we seen that movie? Or was it a TV show?   Simply put, this does not make us a nation of law.  When the ends are used to justify the means we morph into our enemy.  When will agents be issued power drills?

CIA shifts focus to killing targets

It's sad, the only 2012 presidential wannbe who will object to this is Ron Paul.  It may be time to become  a Libertarian?  Is it?

Rick Perry

Mi Lai Lite?

A U.S. diplomatic cable made public by WikiLeaks provides evidence that U.S. troops executed at least 10 Iraqi civilians, including a woman in her 70s and a 5-month-old infant, then called in an airstrike to destroy the evidence, during a controversial 2006 incident in the central Iraqi town of Ishaqi.

Gee, there's money in war, especially if no one audits the disbursement of cash--

Independent panel warns failure to make contracting reforms risks more wartime waste and fraud

Do you think anyone really gives a shit about the waste and fraud? Will any medals be rescinded? Will any commanders, who used to be in the ground, be taken to task? Nah, it's not patriotic to complain, so let's all shut up and cheer for more war.  Besides it was all borrowed money and the unborn taxpayer can't complain today now can they.

VP, Big Fucking Deal, Speaks

And when he does, he usually opens his mouth and inserts his foot.  But he does it in a way that most folks still find him affable.   Did you know the GOP will eliminate Medicare in 10 years?  Wow, that means in 2021 there will be no more Medicare.  I didn't know that, but I do now since Joe told me so.  He's such an informative guy.  I guess that means I'll be cut off with out care when I'm 75.

Biden’s claim that the GOP will ‘eliminate’ Medicare

Little Boy's Clubs are Expensive

The CIA spends lots of tax dollars.  Of course no one is to complain, that would be unpatriotic and besides they might grab, bag, and render you to one of their many contracted torture chambers.  Is it time to get a bit disgusted with the CIA again?  The people who hatched the exploding cigar for Castro may be retired but they logically remain on the job.  Can anyone prove the CIA is cost effective?  I doubt it.  Why  do think they won't open the books?  It's not fear of breaching national security, it's fear of exposing the CIA as rather ineffective little boy's club.  Oh, how high is the CIA on your respect and trust list?

N.Y. billing dispute reveals details of secret CIA rendition flights

Spit Fest

Yesterday the White House announced Obama's cool speech on jobs.  It was going to occur on Wed. at 8, when the GOP debate, starring Rick Perry, is to be held at the Reagan Library.  That sounded dumb therefore it has to have been a political decision by an idiot in the White House.  Then came the oops.

Speaker Boehner informed ObamaCo that the House would not be able to accommodate Obama, he suggested the next day, the 8th.  Oh my, he dissed the President.  The protocol, manners and etiquette crowd gave themselves wedgies.  Obama decided Thursday is okay.  Of course that conflicts with an NFL football game.

The 2012 campaign is underway.  I hope Obama now understands the GOP hates him.  It's been scorched  earth since he won in 2008 for a couple of reasons.  First, Obama is likable.  He may screw up, but people, especially independents, will still vote for him.  Ditto for Democrats.  The GOP knows when Obama goes into full campaign mode he's about impossible to beat unless he's massively screwed up on something and he has not yet.

That is all the GOP has been trying to do, force the massive screw up by saying NO to everything.  As they say NO, they play to Obama's tendency to talk, listen and be a  conciliator.  He has not been caught in the GOP ploy.  So far, the GOP, despite Obama's lower approval numbers will beat any GOP candidate in 2012.  Despite the polls, a guy named Allan Lichtman, who has called every election form '84 on, says 2012 is all Obama's.

Oh, the other reason the GOP hates Obama, yeah, it won't go away, let me put it this way, the GOP is the party of mostly southern rich old white guys and their submissives.

Obama, the Republican field and the battle for prime time

Given the GOP's total fear of Obama, Obama has done okay, he still has all of the Dems and for all practical purposes the independents.  Who looked like the bigger asshole in this round Obama or the GOP?  See.

Take Note for 2012

When someone has called every presidential election since 1984, we might want to listen to what he says about 2012--

Never-Wrong Pundit Picks Obama to Win in 2012

Which will you watch?

The first speaker will address the nation at a joint session of Congress on  Sept. 7, at 8:00 pm.  I guess that means, maybe, he's figured out his plan.  Oh, at the same time there is a GOP Presidential Debate.  This will be Rick Perry's first debate.  Okay, which will you watch and which will you TIVO?  Or which will you watch and which will you read about?  Or which will you watch and which will you ignore?

I have a feeling a significant chunk of the audience share will go Perry.  Why?  Well, it doesn't matter one bit what Obama has to say.  He could take a plan out of Eric Cantor's hands, read it to Congress, and still lose.  The GOP will say no to anything he says.  And the guy still worries about the pragmatics of passage and compromise?  He's just one more beltway denizen.  That's it, he's screwed because he will not,  or does not know how to, use the American public as his echo chamber.  Oh, he's a bit late on this too.  I've had enough of his speeches.  They're like Chinese food, tastes great, but you're hungry for a real meal in about an hour.

I think Obama gets  TIVOd.

Obama jobs speech to Congress on Sept. 7

Oops

The Justice Dept. says no to the AT&T T Mobile merger.  I think most folks assumed the deal would go forward as planned.  What happened?  I guess ATT did not make a large enough donation to the White House, not that money influences anything in our federal government.

Phlogiston Front

Back in 1667 folks explained combustion by saying that in a fire, phlogiston, a substance without colour, odour, taste, or mass was liberated when things burned. What remained was just "dephlogisticated" stuff.  Once phlogiston was proposed, it took a hundred years to dispose of it.  Along the way, an experiment here and a test there, built up evidence that the idea was bunk and they moved on to the caloric theory.  Oh, caloric hung around for a while, but again observation and tests led to its demise as thermodynamics became the explanation of how a substance burns.

Okay, the above loosely covers a lot of old ground, but it's to get you thinking about a bit of science today.  Ready? Think about contemporary physics and the LHC.   Where are the super particles--sparticales?  Any evidence for the god particle?   Now about all that dark matter and stringy stuff...

To touch pad or keep hands off?

HP announced it was going to get out of the PC business.  It unloaded its barely selling Touchpad.  The Touchpad sold out rapidly, the price dropped from $499 to $99.  That's a real sale.  The warehouses were emptied.  Now HP may make one more production run.  Perhaps the product's problem was not technology, but its price.  Why did HP set it's price based on its competitor's?  If the Touchpad had originally been priced for $199 would it have sold?  Should HP stay in the personal computer products business?  Can they really pull off an IBM?  Would you buy HP stock today?

Hewlett-Packard: One final run of HP TouchPads are on the way

Not much changes

Do you remember the 2010 elections?  Irate right wing voters got together, expressed themselves, and elected their kind of folks to Congress.  They elected their Representatives to Congress.  A wave of ill-informed, ahistorical, science hating people who despise government joined the 112th Congress.  The freshmen House members were elected to effect change.  I hope the voters are still paying attention, they didn't change much.  It's just one more case of the more things change the more they stay the same.  Until voters decide that no one gets reelected our political lives will remain SSDD*.  Which makes me wonder, maybe all that anger was not quite so heartfelt and sincere after all but just successful Republican tactics in the permanent campaign.

House freshmen push bills that benefit big donors

Mix them and things often blow up.  The Islamic today world kind of reminds me of Europe and the Reformation.  Imagine if the zealots back then had the today's weapons.

Suicide car bomber strikes after morning prayers, kills 10 in southwest Pakistan

This seems odd

When Bush was in office, his folks created a street sign mandate (unfunded to boot).  The GOP, White House and Congress in 2003, ran the show.  They decided the nation needed easy to read street signs and made it a requirement.  Signs had to be replaced by 2018.

Needless to say, states and localities did not like the law.  Now in 2012, when a Democrat, Obama, is in the White House the unfunded mandate has been dropped.  Of course the GOP will find a way to condemn Obama for this.  We so need new parties and new people in office.

Yep business taxes are too high

That, of course, is 100% pure horseshit.  Maybe Congress, as a self inducement, should pass a law requiring business taxes to go up 1% every year that passes without a re-write of the tax code.   I wonder how much business taxes would increase?

I dumped the water buckets today.  I assumed after 24 hours of water, the water service has been restored.  Of course now that I think about it, I should have kept the water and awaited the next one.

On the "I'm so excited I could just shit" front...

Michele Bachmann memoir due out in November

Some things make no sense

I am afraid the typical Republican voter is nuts.  They are very concerned about debt and deficits in the face of a tanked economy.  Despite how cheap money is today, they will oppose any borrowing to create jobs and goose the economy--think WPA here.   Ditto on taxes.  Also, no tax increases are allowed.  To get out of the mess we can borrow and spend or we can tax and spend or both.  If we just argue and stand on principle all the time then all we're really doing is shilling for someone in 2012.

Gee, A Jobs Program?

After two and a half years, ObamaCo is going to deal with jobs.  Wow.  Can you feel the excitement?  Gee, I think so or it's heat rash.  I have lowered my expectations so many times I've become a ditch digger.  Do you think the aces in the White House know anything about jobs?  Oh, yeah, they know some donor named Jobs just lost his job.  That about sums up the White House plan.

...behind the scenes Obama and top aides had yet to reach agreement on the major tenets of that plan, and it remained unclear whether the president was looking for narrower ideas with a realistic chance of passing the Republican-led House or more sweeping stimulus proposals that would excite his liberal base and draw contrasts with the GOP.

It does not matter what he proposes. It does not matter if it is brilliant or idiotic. It will not work. Why? Oh, he still does not get it, the GOP will deep-six, de-rail, destroy anything he says, proposes, suggests or does. For a pol, the guy and his team have shown world class naivete about the GOP from day one.  Oh, all the alternatives the GOP will counter with are bullshit too.  The problem is not taxes, regulation, or big government.  The problem is there's no reason for capital to invest in the U.S. right now.  Would you?

Post Irene II

One thing I'd forgotten about with all the recent wind and rain is the Great Dismal Swamp.  It's been burning since Aug. 4th.  It's burned up about 6,000 acres.   Similar to Irene's coastal track, the smoke made it's way up the coast, not once, but just about every day.  Sometimes it was a bit too much outside.  The smoke coverage area varied but it has gone from NC up to DC and inland past Richmond--depending on the wind currents.  I have no idea how far south the smoke and smell made it when the winds blew south.   Get ready for this--

The fire is not out!  There are no flames, but it's still smoldering away.  15 inches of rain and the fire burns on.  Amazing.

Hurricane Irene doesn't put out Great Dismal Swamp fire

Two kinds of pols

There are pols who make their millions and then run for office.  Then there are pols who run for office so they can make millions.  The latter all seem to be unrecognized financial geniuses.  We are blessed with them in abundance.   They enter public life poor and finally leave millionaires.  Which type is Rick Perry?

Texas Gov. Perry became a millionaire

How about your local officials?  How many geniuses are you blessed with?

Post Irene

After Irene came and went, I figured it was over, especially after water was restored.  We never lost power, but did lose water after the hurricane passed by.  The water came back, so I figured it was finally over.  I told Mrs. Jake I was going to dump all the water buckets. She, being wise, suggested we keep them full for a while.  I was glad she said that.  Later Sunday evening, the water disappeared again.  As far as I was concerned Irene was still looping around.

This morning the water was still out.  I did use one bucket to flush away some old cares and woes.  Then I sat down to read the news and post a bit.  As I read about Perry and Bachmann I kept wondering how anyone can listen to them, much less vote for them--Texas, Minnesota, Iowa, President.  They make my skin crawl.  I shifted my attention to see what's been happening with the quest for the god particle.

As I started to read, Irene looped in again.  The power went out.  Fortunately the cables and generators were handy.  I could not start one of them which puzzles me a  bit, but the larger one started right up.  We had power.  After about an hour, Irene left--power came back and the water was restored.  I think the hurricane might be over now.  Oh, I discovered the land line phone we have has a mal-functioning 1 button.  We don't use it since the wireless phones work when  the power is on.  I found an old phone, swapped it out and called the power company.  I had to use the landline since my cellphone kept failing.

I hope Irene is really gone, but I have my doubts.

Bye-Bye SuperSymmetry, Hello Techincolor?

Jut when I was starting to get comfortable with Dark Matter, Strings and the Standard Model,  a little thing called evidence may have gotten in the way.  The thing is evidence, as in the lack thereof.  So far, it appears that the LHC has not provided any indirect evidence for super particles and that means we'll have to find a new particle tree to bark up.

LHC results put supersymmetry theory 'on the spot'

The scale is beyond my ken.

Do you remember buying your first 1Gb drive?  Yes, one gigabyte.  That was huge and expensive not too many years ago.  How would like a 120 petabyte file system?  IBM is building one.  Now consider that Facebook did 25 terabytes of logs a day in 2009, I wonder when they'll need IBM's system?

IBM goes for really, really, really big data

What's the weakest link in computer tech?

No brainer on that one, it's people.  Take cyber-security for example.  It doesn't take much--

Gov. Goodhair

Who's that?  Oh, he's the guy who describes himself as having chicken pot pie for brains, Rick Perry.  God, another Texan.  Is we misunderestimating his smarts too?  No, he's average in smarts, but very good at conning people into voting for him.  Remember, a successful pol's only skill is getting the most votes.  As to his knowledge and abilities, that's a different matter.

Is Rick Perry dumb?

I was not ready for this one..

We Know His Theme Song

As Rick Perry keeps on talking about his views on life, the universe and everything else, I've found his theme song.  Yep, it's Ce Lo Green's 2010 hit "Fuck You."  The song summarizes Mr. Perry's political acumen.  Social Security?  Oh, hit it Ce Lo.  Compassion?  Play it one more time.   Taxes?  Obama?  Government?  Yep, spin it again.  Give it a try for yourself, name the program and hum a few bars.  Rick Perry has the answer to all your questions.  Is the nation really ready another Lone Star State asshole from El Paso?  Okay, give it a try.  Rick Perry?  Cue Mr. Green.

Rick Perry has distanced himself from George W. Bush’s brand of conservatism

The legacy just keeps on exploding. Suicide bombers go to church too.  Of course when they feel their fervor it explodes all over everyone else.  33 died in one more bit of exacerbated sectarian tension.  Religion makes for endless and mindless violence.  What the hell, when you have nothing else to lose, why not blame it all on god and destroy a jot of creation for him.   I wonder where god hid the WMDs?

Who listens to this shit?

Worse who listens and agrees with him?  He's nucking futs.

Rick Perry: Social Security is a ‘monstrous lie

Uh, a government program can no more tell the truth than it can lie.  However, people who talk about Social Security can lie through their 10 gallon hat, especially when their boots are full of cowshit.

Irene III

We have returned to civilization.  The water is back.  One thing about a community well, when the power goes, the water goes.  This time the power didn't go, but the water went anyway.  Every time it looks even like a storm, we fill the tub and a bunch of 5 gallon buckets to be sure we're able to flush away our cares and woes.  Those cares and woes can get really rank after a couple of flushless days.

Science and Politics

If you have ever read an intro science book, the this should look familiar--

Define a question
Gather information and resources (observe)
Form an explanatory hypothesis
Perform an experiment and collect data, testing the hypothesis
Analyze the data
Interpret the data and draw conclusions that serve as a starting point for new hypothesis
Publish results
Retest (frequently done by other scientists)

It's the scientific method. It's just one variation that I lifted from Wikipedia. Why this? Well, we seem to have done better in science than we have in politics over the past couple hundred years. Given that, can we use scientific method to come up with a political method?

A note on Jon Boy

Look, as I've posted before, the guy is not a moderate.  He's not the Nelson Rockefeller of Zion.  He's as batty as the rest of the trogs, just a bit to their left.   He might not sit down with Robert Welch, but he's comfy sitting to the right of Barry Goldwater.  He's a wingnut who merely has not eaten batshit in public.

A book to consider

The economy tanks and everybody feels like shit.  Right?  Well, what if it's the other way around?  Yep, everybody feels like shit and the economy tanks. Hmm, I wonder....

Mood Matters

Okay, everybody felt like they had shit for brains and Bush became president? Well...

Why Obama in 2012?

He's not that great.  He didn't quite live up to his well presented self image.  He blew a lot of smoke.  Why vote for him in 2012?  Well, look at his possible opponents.  If you added them all up, you'd be more than a few districts shy of a full blown candidate.  Even collectively they do not measure up to a disappointing Obama.

No money, no free labor, just a vote against the Republicans.  We need a new way to run our political affairs.

Strategic Victory Watch--War #2

As the bombs explode, someone is making the case that we have to hang around after 12/31/11.  Since we never should have been there in the first place, I hope our current commanderator in chiefinees will just order all the troops home.  If the Iraqis need help, they can hire Blackwater (now Xe) and pay for it with all their oil money.

Post Irene II

Hurricanes and I do not get along well together.  I can take tornadoes, you dig a hole, climb in and it blows over.  Snow, well it just piles up and takes a long time to stress structures.  Ditto with a lot of rain.   Hurricanes start bad, hang around, get worse, hang around, make you think it's over, and the bite you in the ass as it leisurely wanders away.

Fortunately, Irene did not remain a Cat 2 or Cat 3.  If she had, I have a feeling I would not be typing right now.  The storm slowly came in all day Saturday.  The rain was intense.  The winds were steady in the 30s with gusts up into the 80s ( I think).  As the eye moved from NC up the coast, the intensity varied from bad to worse and back again.  All those bands you see on the weather channel graphics show up on the ground the same way.  Green, a bit of rain and a breeze.  Red/Orange and oh my god we're all going to die.  That's my simple scale.

All day, I wondered when we would lose power.  If we did, it was last night and I didn't notice it at all.   It's a stressor, waiting for the power to go.  When it does then I have to start generators and find a way to avoid direct rainfall on the machines--they are gas engines.  Fortunately I didn't have to, but I was ready.  Two generators and lots of gas.  I had a plan that would give us about 5 days on generator power then I'd be out of gas.

The power stayed on.  The eye of the storm was on our latitude about 8pm last night.  Then  it crept up the coast.  After deciding the worst must be over about midnight, we turned in.  Remember the bite you in the ass above?  The winds were worse after the eye passed.  This was a huge storm, Richmond had gusts higher than where the storm landed in NC.  The winds kept waking me up or it was the house shaking.

This morning when I went out to see what presents Irene left us I found downed trees.  The wind was still pretty strong.  The trees appeared to have been knocked over by a wind out of the north--after the eye was well past us.  Fortunately they are blown over where I can leave them and not worry.  A small apple tree was toppled by a west wind.  That one I will have to deal with--it's on the garden fence.  It's weird.

Water draining, hell is was a small river at the time,  out of our former field, now a 10 acre wood, did erode the ground a bit as the water roared through a drainpipe and on downhill on into the Corrotoman River .  Other than that no damages.  Oh, the okra now grows horizontally along with the corn, peppers, and basil.  Garden cleanup will be so much fun.

I hate hurricanes.  Now I have to put everything away and await the next one of these monsters.  All in all, this was not as bad as Isabel or Ernesto in the recent past.  We were all very lucky.  I hate hurricanes.

Post Irene

The Tubes is back! The Internets were blown away yesterday afternoon.  Irene came in.  Irene blew through.  I did not expect my WISP to be back in operation so soon.  No damages, other than a few trees.  We didn't even lose power.  However we have no water.  It's weird.  Now let's all sing a round of "Goodnight Irene."
